Gold Coast City Council releases reports surrounding proposed Cruise Ship Terminal

Friday, 2 November 2012

The Gold Coast City Council recently held a surf industry briefing regarding the proposed Cruise Ship Terminal earmarked for development in the Southern Broadwater.  The meeting was designed to canvass topics such as the broader surf industry and culture on the Gold Coast which forms part of the Gold Coast lifestyle whilst being a key economic driver for the Gold Coast.

Some key Cruise Ship Terminal topics outlined from the meeting are as follows:
1: Surfing representatives appreciate the consultation, and although not necessarily supportive, wish to remain engaged in the process.  The Mayor committed to working with the key surf organisations so that we have a robust process, not only for a cruise ship terminal proposal, but other important coastal issues.
2: Although there has been a lot of Council, community and media discussion about a cruise ship terminal, at this stage Council is undertaking prefeasibility work.
3: A terminal could be delivered either by Council with State Government cooperation or through a private development proposal. In either case it’s important that the positive and negative impacts of such a proposal is understood.
4: Council is progressing navigational and economic studies to determine if a terminal is feasible.  Through the navigational studies Council will be consulting with the Harbour Master and Maritime Safety Queensland to discuss the arrival and departure implications related to safety and security in The Seaway and the Broadwater.  Outcomes of these studies will be provided to Council and the community (including surf organisations).
5: If a cruise ship terminal is feasible then the appropriate studies and approvals will be undertaken; security, safety and the environment are all key issues to be addressed.
Two Cruise Ship Terminal reports which were provided at the meeting and Surfing Queensland have now placed this information in the “Documents” section of the Surfing Queensland website.  Surfing Queensland trusts that this will assist all interested parties to form their own opinion regarding this project.
