AUSTRALIA continues its domination of the world surfing scene with TravelSIM Team Australia winning a team gold medal at the Panama ISA World Masters Surfing Championship.
The Australian team’s title came after an intense and tight battle with South Africa - A mere difference of less than 300 points gave the first ISA Masters World Championship to Australia, stopping two years of African supremacy.
Final Team Medal Standings:
Gold: Australia – 10456 points
Silver: South Africa – 10196 points
Bronze: Brazil – 8770 points
Copper: Puerto Rico – 8684 points
Team Australia included Queensland’s Dean Hall (Miami, QLD), Chris Brooks (Currumbin, QLD) and Mark Traucnieks (Palm Beach, QLD) – Well Done Boys!
Meanwhile, the State’s best amateur surfers put on a dazzling display at the recent Country Energy Australian Open Surfmasters Titles, SUP Titles and Longboard Titles held over two-weeks in Port Macquarie, New South Wales.
The Open Women’s Surfmasters final was a one sided affair, with Sunshine Coast ace Dimity Stoyle posting a pair of 9’s to beat Tiana McNeven (Tugun), Laura Macaulay (Gracetown) and Rachel Campbell.
The talented natural footer pulled off some big moves throughout the final day of competition to jag her second consecutive open women’s title.
All states then flew their flags during the tournament’s Teams event, with Queensland consisting of Ice Ryan (Coolangatta), Paul Buratowski (Currumbin), Chris Boyd, Peter Pringle (Mudjimba) and Dimity Stoyle (Buderim).
The Queenslanders took the title, beating New South Wales, Victoria and Western Australia, edging out NSW in the final 44.7 to 38.3.
Meanwhile, the second annual open men’s SUP final was also decided during the event, with former Australian Longboard Champion Jackson Close (Currumbin, Qld) edging out Tweed Head’s Beau Nixon, the Sunshine Coast’s Keahi De Aboitz (Noosa) and Coffs Harbour’s Sinclair Black in a high scoring final.
Close, who made the quarters of the Australian Longboard Titles, got busy from the opening siren, nailing an 8.50 on his first ride, before backing it up with a 7.50 on his very next wave to setup the win. Final scores: Close (16.00), Nixon (15.10), Aboitz (14.85) and Black (11.00).
“I felt I redeemed myself with my win today after a poor finish in the longboard division last week,” said Close.
“It was a great result. There were some fun waves and I’m really happy I came away with the title.”
Last but certainly not least, it was always going to be hard for our longboarders to top their 2009 performance of seven out of a possible eleven national titles, however in the over 35 men’s division, Sunshine Coast surfer Damien Coulter (Buderim) upstaged Byron Bay’s Lee Miller, Michael Pinney (VIC) and Craig Munro (NSW) to take the title. Final Scores: Coulter (14.64), Miller (14.35), Pinney (11.65), Munro (9.45).
Well done to all surfers who proudly represented Queensland on a national and international stage!
